Know the Warning Signs

Is Your Tree Showing These Symptoms?

If any of these apply to a tree on your property, a diagnostic assessment is the right next step. Many of these symptoms appear minor but signal deeper structural or health problems.

  • Dead or dying limbs in the canopy
  • Visible decay, cavities, or hollow sections
  • Fungal growth on trunk or roots
  • Cracks or splits in trunk or major branches
  • Tree leaning or root heave
  • Storm damage or broken limbs
  • Insect activity or unusual pest presence
  • Tree within fall distance of a structure

Not sure if what you're seeing qualifies? Call us — we'll help you figure it out before you schedule anything.

What to Expect

A Multi-Factor Assessment, Not a Quick Look

Tree problems rarely have a single cause. What looks like a disease or pest issue is often a tree already weakened by root damage, soil stress, drought, or poor past pruning. Insects and pathogens attack the vulnerable — treating the symptom without identifying the underlying stressor rarely works.

On-Site Arborist Visit

An ISA Certified Arborist visits your property and conducts a systematic evaluation — root zone, soil conditions, structural integrity, pest and disease indicators, and environmental stress factors.

Written Assessment Report

You receive a formal written report with findings, identified stressors, and recommended next steps. Suitable for insurance claims, legal documentation, or property transactions.

Fertilization If Warranted

If soil nutrient deficiency is identified as a contributing factor, fertilization is included in the diagnostic fee — no additional charge.

Diagnostic FAQs

What exactly is a tree diagnostic?

A tree diagnostic is a formal, on-site assessment performed by an ISA Certified Arborist. Rather than a quick visual inspection, it's a systematic evaluation of your tree's health, structure, and risk — covering root zone conditions, soil health, signs of disease or pest activity, structural integrity, and environmental stress factors. You receive a written report with findings and recommendations.

How much does a diagnostic cost?

Our diagnostic assessment is $450. This includes the arborist visit, a written assessment report, and fertilization if it's determined to be appropriate for your tree's condition. The $450 is applied toward any subsequent tree work you approve.

How is this different from a free estimate?

A free estimate is scoped around work you already know you want done — removal, trimming, stump grinding. A diagnostic is for situations where something is wrong and you don't yet know what, or where you need a formal, documented assessment for insurance, legal, or property sale purposes. The diagnostic is deeper, more thorough, and produces a written report.

Why do tree problems involve multiple factors?

Trees don't decline from a single cause. What looks like a disease or pest problem is often a secondary issue — the insects or pathogens are attacking a tree already weakened by drought stress, root damage, soil compaction, poor pruning, or other factors. A proper diagnostic identifies the underlying stressors, not just the visible symptoms. Treating only the symptom rarely solves the problem.

Does my tree need a diagnostic or just a removal estimate?

If your tree is clearly dead, structurally failed, or you've already decided it needs to come down, a free removal estimate is the right next step. If you're unsure what's wrong, whether the tree can be saved, or if you need documentation for insurance or legal purposes — that's when a diagnostic is the right call. When in doubt, call us and we can help you decide.

What happens after the diagnostic?

You receive a written report with the arborist's findings and recommended next steps. There's no obligation to proceed with any work. If you do approve work, the $450 diagnostic fee is credited toward that job. We'll schedule the work at a time that works for you.
